A Candid Exploration of My Life’s Chapters

My Story

“I hope that reading about my journey, filled with both challenges and triumphs, encourages you to find your own passion”

In the early 2000’s, despite being in my fifth year of college, I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my future. I had tried many different paths, and wasn’t happy with any of them. I dropped out of school. I applied for work and was rejected by many companies.

I was frustrated and broke, living on friends’ couches because I couldn’t afford a safe apartment. I spent most of my free time reading e-books and watching TV. I worked as a green home consultant, knocking on doors and selling products and services to make homes healthier. It was during this time I began exploring avenues for a career that I could genuinely love. My interest in real estate eventually led me to the home inspection industry.

Entering the Real Estate Inspection Industry

Entering the Real Estate Inspection Industry

Taking steps along my chosen career path, I was timid and lacked self-esteem. I had no experience in the real estate field.
I launched Dallas GreenWorks in 2009, but was unable to gain traction in the industry. I had no clientele, no employees and no contacts. Desperate for clients, I would offer to wash their cars if they gave me a chance to earn their business. I charged rock-bottom prices and did everything in my power to get a foot in the door.
I was fortunate to meet an investor who gave me some guidance and introduced me to people in her circle. It took me 2 years of networking and cold-calling before word of mouth got out about my service and I was getting repeat business. I finally had enough work to hire a full-time inspector instead of contracting them on an as-needed basis. I kept working hard for my clients, striving to give 150% to each one. I invested every penny back into my company, using side-jobs to pay for my living expenses.

From Cold Calls to Industry Leader

Finding my passion did not put me in the fast lane to success, but hard work and perseverance eventually paid off. Today, that startup is the largest inspection company in Texas—and one of the biggest in North America.

Personal Growth &
Pursuing What You Love

Throughout my journey, life has had its fair share of surprises. Against all odds, as a homeless fifth-year college dropout, I managed to turn this unsuccessful startup into one of the fastest-growing privately-owned real estate service companies in the U.S. However, my success wasn’t just in achieving financial gains, but also discovering my true potential.

During these tumultuous years, I learned a couple of important lessons:

  1. I am stronger than I ever knew.
  2. The significance of finding work that truly fulfills me, even if I have to sacrifice much to achieve it.

Despite being initially timid and lacking self-esteem, and with limited exposure to inspections, I was determined to follow my passion. As time went on, I came to realize that my internal mindset was the primary obstacle I needed to overcome. Once I embraced this realization, I was able to transform myself from who I was into the person I aspired to be, making it my greatest and most rewarding sacrifice.

From the very beginning of my journey, I embraced the opportunities to pursue my goals, which did require some sacrifices. I let go of other interests, hobbies, and spent time away from my family, all while pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on this remarkable journey, I can proudly say that I have transformed into an improved and empowered version of myself.

Embracing a Well-Rounded Life

After years of dedicating every minute to my business, I have finally reached a point where I can give some of my time and attention to other pursuits. I enjoy playing pickleball, hiking, and hanging out with friends when more important things aren’t competing for my time.

The Heart of it All

My wife, Jessica Brownwood, has brought new ideas and energy to GreenWorks as our Chief Growth Officer. Jessica’s role goes far beyond her title. She is the lead-generation maestro who directs a symphony of success. Her expertise has helped to transform GreenWorks into a growth force, laying the foundation for its remarkable expansion.
Jessica has done so much more than just bring new life to GreenWorks! Our son, Britain, was born in February of 2025, and there are no words for the love and admiration I feel for both my wife and baby. They give me the motivation I need to keep pushing- to be better and do more every day.
